2018 WORK IN PROGRESS: The New Normal or Parallel Universes
The process includes combinations of 2D and 3D images and techniques, such as anaglyphs.
But the results I am going for are, primarily, not 3D.
The images are designed to be viewed with or without special glasses, but the effect is more powerful with them.
These selections are kind of a "sketchbook" for you to follow along as I work through various possible implementations, and images here will change as the series evolves. The widest selection is available on my Instagram.
RED AND BLUE POLITICS: SHIMMYGLYPHS
The red and blue represent the binary nature of discourse in our current times (as in red and blue U.S. state political affiliations). The warm, fuzzy, nostalgic 3D retro "Make America Great Again" vibe betrays. The unsettled and unsettling viewer experience serves as a metaphor for the individual and national anxiety due to the polarization within the never-ending yet repetitious news sound bites. You are, literally, looking at "two sides of the same story" at the same time.
Viewed with red/blue 3D glasses, each eye sees a very different image. This creates a liquid moving surface as your brain tries to resolve the two into a single image that makes sense. Which it can't. Shimmyglyphs are not 3D; you perceive two separate realities simultaneously.
Experience it for yourself. Get out your 3D glasses and scroll down to see stills, or visit Played for a Fool on YouTube, documentation from a projection / live narration experiential piece performed on April 1, 2019 (April Fool's Day).
CLIMATE CHANGE: CHROMADEPTH
3D anaglyphs can also be red and green or even multicolor, and these separations become the starting point for each image. Elements from one or more photographs are further layered and composed in dimensional space. Each color appears as a separate plane in the third dimension, which can be experienced only with the Chromadepth glasses. I like this technique for the visual statements about climate change, the tenacity and creativity of evolution, and the divisions between climate science and deniers, or the alternatives as the world today turns into the world of the future.
