BACK TO THE GARDEN

In this ongoing series, I contemplate current environmental events (such as warmer global temperature, wildfires, ocean acidity) and envision a familiar yet unfamiliar future world as it adapts and transitions with or without us.
Via the accompanying live spoken voiceover, I become the Earth's avatar and she becomes mine. The statements represent natural and personal transitions. Composed in layered space and best experienced with Chromadepth glasses, the dynamics and otherworldliness of eons of destruction and evolution are enhanced through the separation of each color onto a different dimensional plane. To maintain the necessary brilliance and purity of colors mixed with additive light for the effect to work best, these images are displayed using RGB light sources such as projections, mobile devices, or monitors. Prints are best viewed in direct sunlight. |

THE NEW NORMAL (or PARALLEL UNIVERSES)
Now more than even "there is no one truth." These works convey the discomfort and frustration experienced when trying to resolve both points of view within the current polarized dialogs, such as in politics (red/blue states), climate change (science/deniers), and even love.
Viewed with standard red/blue 3D glasses, each eye sees a very different image. As the red and blue fight for attention, and your brain tries to resolve the unresolvable, a liquid moving surface occurs. Shimmyglyphs are not 3D; you perceive two separate realities simultaneously. Experience it for yourself. Get out your 3D glasses and visit the video documentation from the live experiential performance Played for a Fool. |
HERE
HERE is designed to run during events such as art festivals. Throughout the run of the event, text notifications are pushed through the app at different times each day, encouraging the participant to more fully experience that exact moment in their life.
The participant's eyes move "out of the rectangle" for the visual element, and so the imagery and experience are pulled from their immediate surroundings.
Although everyone receives the pre-programmed notifications at the same time, each person's experience is unique based on the context of their location and personal associations with it.

ALL GOOD
Virtual halos were placed around the world for augmented redemption via the Layar app.
Art Chattanooga commissioned a site-specific All Good for AR Halos to float around the city during their SPARK festival. I placed an AR halo at the North Pole to make the whole world good. I put a few over the Occupy Wall Street protesters in Zuccotti Park in support. They were floating over major landmarks in major cities (think Eiffel Tower) just for fun. The one in this photo was directly above me in my back yard. The startup hosting service for the location POI went dark one day so this project is no longer live. |
THE ANNUNCIATION (THE BIRDS)
The story of The Annunciation of Mary as told in Luke, illustrated by promotional film stills from Alfred Hitchcock's The Birds.
Identifying with Mary, I find this story frightening. The movie scenes were chosen to mirror classic iconography from Annunciation artworks over time (holy spirit descending on Mary, when she is surprised by Gabriel, when she resists, when she acquiescence, etc.) |
Set of eleven images, available in industrial aluminum sign frames or as a boxed set.
Edition of three plus AP. See a slideshow of all plates and installation views.

GOD
I DO NOT BELONG WITH THEM
Where one feels they do or do not belong is one of the strongest indicators of self-image. The feeling of belonging is an internal compass, driven by the unconscious; a comfort/anxiety scale related to a specific place and time. No matter where we want to belong, this feeling always tells us our true self. Often, it is explained away by easily identifiable characteristics of sameness and otherness that the others may not even care about.
The creation of this artwork has been made possible, in part, through a chashama Visual Arts Studio Award. |
Forty page handmade book. Hand painted silkscreen on paper, museum board, linen, signed and editioned by the artists.
Collaboration with Danny Licul. |

The titles change.
The faces stay the same. Displayed two or more at a time, the audience compares their impressions, and feels their comfort level, of each person in each different role. Watch as the titles change underneath the faces here. The second set of photos is from "Your..." a similar piece exploring comfort levels of relationships. |
